Pairing Nuts and Wine in Autumn

Nuts and WineWhen it comes to fine foods, autumn is my favourite season.  So much wonderful produce is at its best at this time, but there is one pairing in particular that I feel truly captures the flavour of autumn.

My ideal autumn pairing is fresh nuts with full-bodied wines.  Sweet and savoury nutty flavours are perfectly complemented by a ripe Bordeaux, rich port or a fine red dessert wine.

Chestnuts, hazelnuts, almonds and walnuts are all at their finest this season.  The sound of walnuts cracking is, for me, even more evocative of autumn than the crunch of leaves underfoot.  For true decadence, add high quality, single estate, dark chocolate.  When paired with seasonal nuts and wine, chocolate makes the best treat or petit four. So don’t despair when summer fades away.  The end of summer means it’s time to reap the benefits of the sunshine through culinary delights!
