Chocolate - An Alternative To Coffee?

We’re often encouraged to reduce our intake of caffeine, and for most of us that means cutting down on coffee.  Gloomy weather or a hectic schedule can make staying focussed throughout the day a challenge, but there is a lighter caffeine alternative. Chocolate is the perfect pick-me-up!

Unlike your favourite coffee, high quality chocolate contains only a small amount of caffeine, but it’s enough to perk you up and help you feel more alert.  This uplifting feeling is thanks to theobromine, a mild stimulant that is gentler than caffeine, yet still provides a much needed energy boost!

Theobromine is found in cocoa beans themselves.  Not all chocolate is made equally though, as mass-produced, cheap chocolate is high in fat and sugar and low in cocoa solids.  So the better the quality of your chocolate, the better the boosted energy reward.  And as an added bonus, just a couple of squares of good quality dark chocolate have fewer calories than your cappuccino or frothy latte too!

Why not keep a small stash of fine quality, dark chocolate in your desk drawer for those times when your energy levels are flagging?  If there’s a more delicious way to cut back on caffeine I have yet to discover it!
