Studies have shown that if you have a sweet tooth, your genes could be the reason why. But how should a preference for sweet things affect the foods you choose?
A recent study by Professor Hely Tuorila, professor of sensory food science at the University of Helsinki, has shown that a preference for sweet foods may be inherited. Such a preference would once have been useful, encouraging our ancestors to seek out fruit and high energy food, but nowadays it can easily lead to eating sugary foods to excess.
In my view, a liking for sweet treats does not have to mean a bad diet. My preference is to avoid foods made with artificial sweeteners and refined sugar, as these ingredients often lead to a sweet addiction. In contrast, high quality chocolate, made with unrefined cane sugar, can be enjoyed daily in moderation, and actually benefit health.
